In 1989, Canadian Businessman, TV and record producer Tristan Del, went to Moscow in search of Russian classical music recordings, to be used for the soundtrack of a US television programme. It was the confused, dying days of the Soviet regime: a time of frustration and difficulty for anyone doing business, but, as it proved, a time of great opportunity. In September of the following year his sleuthing had taken him to Medvedkovo, a northern suburb of the city. Here a huge, beige building housed the recorded music archives of Gosteleradio, the state television and radio company. Doggedly, Del had nagged and cajoled bureaucrats at every level to be let in. Finally, to his astonishment he found himself among shelf after shelf, row after row, corridor after corridor of brown boxes containing 70 years worth of recordings from Soviet broadcasting.
